Fishing in Glimmerwick

Quick answer

Buy the rod at Mel's Shell south of Wick, beyond the grumpy bush. Equip it, click near fish or bubbles, then click again at the exclamation mark.

Buy the rod at Mel's Shell, south of Wick, beyond the grumpy bush. Equip it from your bag, cast near visible fish or bubbles, and click again at the exclamation mark. Fishing uses the rod; playing a flute tune at the water does not start it.

Get the fishing rod first

  1. Leave Wick by the southern path and reach the bush blocking the way to the coast.
  2. If the path is closed, follow the local quest that clears that bush. A locked southern route is an access problem, rather than a missing fishing class.
  3. Continue to the merchant at Mel's Shell and open the shop. Buy the Fishing Rod, then equip it before returning to the water.

The route comes from two October 1 replies on the game's Steam forum: one places the merchant south of town beyond the bush; the other names Mel's Shell. You do not need to restart because you missed a conversation about owning a rod.

Cast, hook, then play the rhythm

On keyboard and mouse, the loop has three separate inputs:

StageWhat to look forAction
CastFish shapes or bubbles under the waterWith the rod equipped, left-click nearby water
HookAn exclamation mark after castingClick again to enter the fishing minigame
Reel inThe rhythm promptsClick in time with the prompts until the catch resolves

Do not keep clicking through the bite: the second input starts a different screen. If you skipped the first tutorial pop-up, this is the sequence it was explaining. The minigame resembles song timing, but it does not ask you to play different musical notes.

Make the timing easier

Update 1.04b added a fishing accessibility option; 1.05 corrected its name in the options menu. Open the accessibility settings before repeating a difficult catch. Adjusting fishing assistance is separate from finding a rod or opening the southern route.

For a catch that repeatedly fails, check the stage at which it fails. No casting target, no bite input and a missed rhythm are three different problems; changing your timing cannot repair a target that never appeared.

Controller and Steam Deck: no target circle

Players reported the missing casting circle on controllers at launch, and a Steam Deck player reported the same symptom on October 23. If moving the stick does not produce a target, try the mouse input path for fishing. This workaround concerns the fishing interaction; it does not require changing the rest of your controls.

Check that the rod is equipped and aim near visible fish before changing settings. A blocked path to the merchant and an invisible casting circle need different fixes.

Fish rewards, Clover and selling

1.06 fixed the quick-transfer button failing to register Florian's fish rewards. 1.08 fixed a duplicated Clover during her fishing sequence in certain quest states. Update before trying to solve either symptom by repeating the entire quest.

Spare catches can go through the Botanical Garden well, the same selling route as other ordinary items. Keep anything you need for a quest or reward hand-in; sorting a bag is not the same as deciding that everything in it is expendable. See selling and storage for quick-transfer controls and lost-tool recovery.
