Spells and songs
Every spell is a song played on your flute — including the Song of Tilling, the first one you learn. Mastery is tuned so 'learned' is easy and 'perfected' takes practice.
In Glimmerwick, magic is music: every spell in the game is a song you play on your flute. This page covers how that works, the order songs arrive, and how mastery develops, based on the demo, the store copy and the developers' patch notes.

Quick answer
Every song is a spell. Ancient songs make garden work a breeze, let you speak with trees, enchant tools to work on their own, and raise the earth to get past natural obstacles. Songs are unlocked through the story and classes — not by grinding.
The songbook so far
The Song of Tilling is the first song you learn — it turns over garden plots — and demo patch 0.484 made it deliberately easier to play, to smooth the difficulty ramp of the music mini-game.
| Song | What it does | How you get it |
|---|---|---|
| Song of Tilling | Prepares garden plots | Your first class (demo) |
| Alchemical Resonance | Alchemy song; the ghost-treasure riddle needs it | An alchemist — player-reported |
| Tree-speech songs | Talk to trees | Story |
| Tool enchantments | Make tools work by themselves | Story |
| Earth-raising songs | Lift the ground to surmount obstacles | Story |
More songs unlock as the story opens up. Update 1.03 (October 7, 2026) added a UI note for songs that have no practiceable version — Alchemical Resonance is the one the notes name — so a song the game will not let you rehearse is working as intended, not bugged.
Song Mastery: learned vs perfected
Songs have a mastery track. The developers tuned it so a "learned" rating is easy to reach, while "perfected" takes real practice (demo patch 0.465). Their guidance: do not expect to max a song on the first try — or the fourth.
The rhythm step is optional
You can skip the music mini-game entirely and still finish the game. If you engage with it, it gets easier with repetition — and the earliest song in the game was retuned for exactly that reason.
